Jason. In fact you're right, you've got me. This article is more of a rant written for my own amusement than a serious argument against television as a medium.

While it's true I no longer watch television, more reasons that are easy to summarize factiously contributed to my switiching off; and I've stayed away primarily because of advertising. To be honest I think declining rating are as much to do with the demand for immediate gratification inculcated by endless websurfing, than any subjective reduction in quality.

There is great television still being made, and it's production doesn't neatly fit into my artificial time line. Six Feet Under, the new This American Life show, and Dexter are all good examples.

I too sneak a peek at Battlestar from time to time. Though that Gaius Baltar subplot is really irritating.

OK Gareth
You've turned off for now ... but you'll be back.
It's true TV is the cultural equivalent of a ready meal to the nets international food hall (although you’ll find a lot of junk there too).
but you appear to be turning your back on video completely.
I'll admit that interesting shows are harder to find as you sift through the reality tv rubbish.
but if you totally turn off you'd miss dramas the likes of
band of brothers or Dexter
or the interesting documentaries from channel4 bbc national geographic and discovery
I once knew a singer songwriter who declared all other types on music to be inferior and avoided them, effectively cutting himself off from the occasional gem that comes from mainstream, rock, pop, dance or what have you.
never say never

now I'm off to watch battlestar ... damn did I blow my cred there? ..... a guilty pleasure ..
